Do you think that "obesity" should be a disability ?

If a person is obese, then it should not be our responsibility to

pay for them in taxes. I think this is just outrageous. Some groups

are trying to get a bill passed for people who are obese or overweight.

And if they are sick and cannot work, then we the hard workers, may

have to pay for them just to live in this world, through health care

and other forms of government care. Now do you think that this is

fair ? I was at McDonalds the other day and too many people are

big at will. They do not want to excercise or walk the weight off.

So they just sit there and let it pile on bigtime. Now is that our fault,

the ones who are non obese. Of course not. So why are some of

you out there considering a fight for this law. Gimme a break. Why

even bring it up.................

No being lazy and having no self control should not entitle you to anything besides for a shortened life span.

Yes, as long as they are willing to accept the treatment , a mandatory gastric bypass surgery.

Obviously just obesity cannot be considered a disability - I am obese and I am certainly not disabled in any way (and I exercise at least 5 hours a week, do not drink or smoke and eat vegetarian!). When a person has a debilitating condition or disease that is DIRECTLY related to their weight I can see that it would hack some people off that taxes go to pay for their care, but you could apply that to anyone who does not act in a completely sensible and measured way all the time. Drinking, smoking, drugs, unprotected sex etc - have you never done even one of those to excess?

I am with you on this one. When you are obese you can lose weight, unless you are in the 0,0001% of obese people with a serious medical condition.

The rest is all excuses. You do not see women in the bad parts of Africa getting fat, not after 1 baby and not after 7.

The kind of enviroment USA and Europe lives in is still relatively young. If the unparallelled wealth we live with persists we will hopefully adapt to it.

However I do not think McD is to blame eithier. A supersized menue that makes our big menue look tiny ? Hook it up. People need to accept that by eating uneducated you get fat and need to learn to monitor their KCAL intake.

Carbs get you fat like nothing else, thats why when I visit my folks in Italy I skip breakfast. Then you can take carbs every day too.

Lack of self-control...

NOW it's a "disease"...

NO FING WAY!

Obesity in 95% of cases is overeating and lazieness.
- By Iceman on Jun 19th, 2009.

No. Obesity is self inflicted.

Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson's Disease etc are not.

For those that are pr oven to be overweight due to over eating then not a chance in hell! As for those with health issues as in under active thyroid glands, or other medical problems then fair enough.

My sister is over weight due to thyroid problems, she eats better quality foods than most, exercises as much as she can without killing herself, and yet she still suffers which is horrible to see.

People who call others obese need to be sure of their facts first.

Totally agree! They are obese because they are lazy, and if they are classed 'disabled' and have everything paid for by tax payers and don't work, they only sit in the house and become bigger and bigger.

If it wasn't classed as a disablility, they wouldn't get money and as a result they would be motivated to go out and work, and exercise, and dress better ect.
- By Lau_R_x on Jun 19th, 2009.

No.

Obesity is self-inflicted (except when it's due to hormonal imbalances). Let's not incriminate ALL those Feminists who became obese watching ALL those Oprah/Rosie O' Donnel shows on TV ALL day long!
- By Know It All on Jun 19th, 2009.

I think it all depends on how they got obese or the true cause of it. If it is really a medical cause then fine, but if it's just poor choices then I agree with you.

There is an additional topic and that is many pills given drive people to crave. People are told they can't live or feel balanced without the medicine. This is the same topic with a whole other subject.

No, and my answer isn't based on money either. It is first about being able to take care of ones basic needs such as keeping house, walking out to get the mail, taking a shower etc. If a person can't do that then it's an *emergency* and should not be offered up as acceptable habit that is out of ones control. If a person is in too deep perhaps a three month program of positive assistance with requirements but to offer disability as a lifer forget it, that is cruel.

In a way, this is really no different than someone who is an alcoholic or a smoker. Food has become an abused substance in a way. So, I don't think that taxpayers should have to shoulder the bill for these folks, but of course we already all are. Our insurance is going up due to folks that are obese.

Just like I don't necessarily think people who smoke and drink want to keep smoking and drinking, I don't every person who is heavy wants to be heavy, but at the same time, where does personal accountability come in? I think that my be why I like the show "Biggest Loser" simply because all of this morbidly obese people get worked out and taught how to eat better and what do you know? They all lose a ton of weight and go off of their medications and get healthier. How crazy eh?

So yeah, we live in a fast food society in the US, no doubt about it. How do we stop that? We quit eating there. So wild it will work. Please don't tell me that some people don't have money or time to make their own meals, that's just bogus, it's cheaper buying food and you can be careful about what goes into it. Bottom line, if it matters to you, you'll make the time.

I think it depends on the situation. I was once at 270 pounds and no matter how hard I tried to loose weight it would not come off. After years of exercising my went to a doctor who discovered I had a metabolizing problem that came from my tonsils and adenoids. Once I had those removed, I was able to loose weight and keep it off.

Not all overweight people are overweight because they choose to be.

There are people who are classified as "obese" but who are still healthy and fit as defined by their personal physician! Fit does NOT equate to thinness.

Don't always assume that just because someone is larger than the norm that they are lazy, unfit and eat nothing but fast food...or that they're simply not trying or making excuses.

I can tell you from personal experience it's not easy to lose the weight once you get past age 40, no matter how much dieting or exercising one does. Even if they do lose 50 lbs or so, some of them will still remain large...and most will NEVER look like fashion models.
- By xoxoxo on Jun 20th, 2009.

I know one person who actually had a metabolic problem and she suffered for years with people assuming that she was just a pig. Once it was diagnosed and treated, she reduced quite rapidly to a normal weight and has been there for years.

On the other hand, seeing enormous people buying trolleyloads of useless junk food always makes me want to shake some sense into them.

And on the other hand again, the cycle of addiction -- to any substance, food being just one of them but more conplicated since we can't live with out it -- is hard to break and some assistance is often required.

So I know what you mean but am reluctant to race to universally applied judgment (as with so many other questions in life).
